Key Responsibilities
Information Governance Strategy
- Develop and implement a comprehensive information governance (IG) framework aligned with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the adoption of best practices for managing electronic and physical records, including data lifecycle management, classification, and retention.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define IG policies and ensure alignment with the firm’s strategic goals.
Technology and Data Management
- Oversee the use of technology systems to store, manage, and secure client and firm information.
- Evaluate and implement IG technologies, including document management systems (DMS), email archiving solutions, and eDiscovery tools.
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of data repositories, metadata, and information access controls.
Compliance and Risk Mitigation
- Monitor compliance with information governance policies and legal obligations, including GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, and other relevant regulations.
- Partner with IT Security to mitigate risks associated with data breaches and unauthorized access.
- Conduct regular audits and assessments to ensure adherence to IG standards and recommend corrective actions as necessary.
Training and Awareness
- Develop and deliver IG training programs for attorneys, paralegals, and support staff.
- Act as a resource for information management queries and provide ongoing support to ensure policy compliance.
- Foster a culture of data stewardship and information security throughout the firm.
Collaboration and Leadership
- Liaise with legal teams, IT, compliance, and risk management to integrate IG into business processes.
- Serve as a thought leader for technology-driven IG initiatives, including AI and analytics applications.
- Manage and mentor IG team members, fostering professional growth and development.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Law, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in information governance, data management, or IT governance within a law firm or professional services organization.
- Certifications such as IGP (Information Governance Professional), CIPP (Certified Information Privacy Professional), or CIP (Certified Information Professional) are highly desirable.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong understanding of legal and regulatory compliance requirements for data governance.
- Experience with document management systems (e.g., iManage, NetDocuments) and other IG tools.
- Knowledge of data privacy regulations and eDiscovery processes.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
